Crystalens™

Crystalens™ is a new cataract replacement lens (IOL) that works naturally with muscles in the eye to retain the eye’s ability to “accommodate” – shift focus between nearby and distant objects – after cataract surgery. With other IOLs, patients lose this ability and require corrective measures such as glasses or contact lenses.

Unlike rigid lenses, the flexible silicone Crystalens features hinges that allow it to move with the eye’s muscles and accommodate seamlessly, thereby reducing or eliminating the need for vision correction.

The Crystalens is implanted using the same, advanced cataract surgery techniques as with other IOLs.

Most people with cataracts or who have had corneal refractive surgery and retained good eye health are acceptable candidates for Crystalens implantation, but those who have already had cataract surgery are not. People with health problems such as chronic infections or diabetes should check with their ophthalmologist about eligibility.

Visian ICL

The Visian ICL™ by STAAR Surgical is an Implantable Collamer Lens used to correct myopia (nearsightedness) in adults without altering the cornea. It is the only minimally-invasive foldable lens available in the U.S. Made of a patented collagen-containing material called collamer, the Visian ICL is highly biocompatible, meaning it can be implanted in the eye with minimal risk of rejection.

Under topical anesthesia, the ICL and a gel-like substance is placed behind the iris through a tiny incision in the cornea. The gel is then removed. The procedure takes about 15 minutes and no stitches are required.

The ICL's location allows it to provide excellent quality of vision and also ensures that it is invisible to others. The ICL can be removed or replaced at any time, and patients can wear glasses or contact lenses or choose to have other procedures done with the ICL in place.
