A cataract is simply the clouding of the eye’s naturally clear lens. While most cataracts develop with advancing age, there are other factors that can cause or accelerate a cataract. Other conditions that can lead to cataracts are exposure to ultraviolet light, trauma to the eye and diabetes. Additionally, lifestyle factors such as diet, alcohol consumption and smoking have an impact on the development of a cataract.

As part of their community awareness project to promote National Cataract Awareness Month, we are encouraging everyone over age 60 to have their eyes evaluated this month. This outreach project for our local communities is an excellent way for patients to not only better understand how cataracts can affect your vision, but also to receive painless diagnostics that can help determine which patients are currently experiencing vision loss from cataract development.
