Drs. Mark F. Pyfer and Mark S. Pyfer to Attend ASCRS Annual Meeting
Dr. Mark F. Pyfer and Dr. Mark S. Pyfer attended the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. this April. This prestigious event brings together the world’s leading cataract and refractive surgeons to share the latest research, technologies, and surgical techniques in vision correction. Attendees gain valuable insight into emerging innovations that improve patient outcomes, safety, and recovery times. By participating in this conference, our surgeons remain at the forefront of advancements in eye care, ensuring their patients benefit from the most current and effective treatments available.
April Ophthalmology Observances:
- Sports Eye Safety Month: Initiated by the American Academy of Ophthalmology to prevent the ~100,000 sports-related eye injuries occurring annually. It highlights the necessity of protective, shatterproof glasses for activities like basketball, soccer, and hockey
- Injury Prevention: The AAO highlights that over 100,000 people are injured in sports-related incidents yearly, with 13,500 resulting in permanent vision loss.
- Protective Gear: wearing sport-specific, certified protective eyewear during activities to prevent injuries.
- Women’s Eye Health and Safety Month: Highlights that women account for two-thirds of blindness and visual impairment cases. It focuses on risks like menopause, pregnancy, and higher incidences of diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, and dry eye.
Wills Eye has a long history of providing continuing medical education opportunities to ophthalmologists and community physicians through its Department of Continuing Medical Education. April Ophthalmology Observances Sports Eye Safety Month
Sports Eye Safety Month was initiated by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) to raise awareness about the nearly 100,000 sports-related eye injuries that occur each year. Many of these injuries are preventable with the proper use of protective eyewear. The initiative emphasizes the importance of wearing shatterproof, sport-specific goggles during activities such as basketball, soccer, baseball, and hockey. By promoting education and prevention, this observance aims to significantly reduce the risk of serious eye injuries among athletes of all ages.
Injury Prevention Awareness
The AAO reports that over 100,000 individuals experience sports-related eye injuries annually, with approximately 13,500 cases resulting in permanent vision loss. These statistics highlight the critical need for increased awareness and proactive safety measures. Many injuries occur during recreational play where protective eyewear is often overlooked. Educating athletes, parents, and coaches about the risks—and the simple steps that can prevent them—can make a meaningful difference in preserving lifelong vision.
Protective Gear and Eye Safety
Wearing certified, sport-specific protective eyewear is one of the most effective ways to prevent eye injuries. Protective lenses made from polycarbonate materials are designed to withstand high-impact activities and provide superior protection compared to regular glasses. Athletes should ensure their eyewear meets safety standards appropriate for their sport and fits properly for maximum effectiveness. Making protective eyewear a standard part of sports equipment can dramatically reduce injury rates and safeguard vision.
Women’s Eye Health and Safety Month
Women’s Eye Health and Safety Month brings attention to the fact that women account for nearly two-thirds of all blindness and visual impairment cases worldwide. This observance highlights unique risk factors women face, including hormonal changes related to pregnancy and menopause, as well as a higher prevalence of conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, and dry eye syndrome. It also encourages women to prioritize regular comprehensive eye exams and early detection. Raising awareness empowers women to take proactive steps in protecting their vision and maintaining long-term eye health.

Mark F. Pyfer, MD of Wills Eye Hospital’s Cataract and Primary Eye Care Service presented this topic to our residents as part of the Basic and Clinical Science Course (BCSC) series.
Dr. Pyfer specializes in cataract and refractive surgery. His current research focus concerns advanced techniques for maximizing quality of vision after surgery, including wavefront aberration measurement and correction using the excimer laser and minimal-aberration intraocular lens implants. He has also published and presented work in outcomes of combined cataract and glaucoma surgery, ocular blood flow measurement and visual results including contrast sensitivity after LASIK and cataract surgery. Dr. Pyfer serves as an advisor to medical students interested in ophthalmology and is actively involved in teaching cataract and refractive surgical techniques to ophthalmologists-in-training at Wills Eye Hospital.
